Expert lecture on World Environment Day at M.M. Modi College
The Eco Club of Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala organized an Expert lecture on the occasion of World Environment Day, based on the theme of ecosysytem restoration. This lecture was organised to discuss the challenges we are facing with regards to Environmental degradation and the future strategies for its remediation. Expert speaker in this virtual lecture was Dr. Anil K. Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, M.M. Deemed University Mullana who has worked extensively in the field of bioremediation i.e. use of microbes in restoration of the environment.
College Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar in his welcome address talked about how only academia and sensitised social groups are deliberating on the issues of environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. He urged the students to understand the fragile relationship between nature and human beings and how we are traversing a fine line between corporate greed and sustainable development. He spoke about the scientists who are working tirelessly to offer solutions towards our goal of sustainable development, but proffered that knowledge about these issues is not enough, we as scientists and educators have to translate this knowledge into action by following a multipronged approach of sensitising and mobilising the masses.
Dr.Ashwani Sharma, Dean Life Sciences and Co-ordinator of the event elaborated on the theme of Environment Day, 2021 “Ecosystem restoration”. He said that all of the species except humans are contributing towards conserving the environment while human beings are selfishly exploiting it. He motivated the students pledge their allegiance as torch bearers for reviving our ecosystem so that we can guarantee sustainable livelihoods, fight climate change and halt the extinction of biodiversity.
In his lecture Dr. Anil K. Sharma talked about how Nature has existing mechanisms where toxic waste is recycled by microbes and changed to nontoxic end products. But, due to indiscriminate use of pesticides and other toxicants this existing process is not sufficient for our needs. He explained how he has explored the multifaceted potential of Microbes like Bacteria and Fungi in removal of heavy metal contaminants (Lead and Cadmium) and how various bacteria can be mixed in a consortium to achieve synergistic effect of degradation of persistent pesticides in the soil. He said that citizen driven initiatives reinforced with competent scientific research are the need of the hour.
Dr Rohit Sachdeva technically co-ordinated the program while a formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr.Kuldeep Kumar, Head, Department of Biotechnology. A large number of faculty members and students attended the event.

ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦਿਵਸ ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ
ਸਥਾਨਿਕ ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਈਕੋ-ਕਲੱਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅੱਜ ‘ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦਿਵਸ’ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਿਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ-ਪੱਧਰੀ ਥੀਮ ‘ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਪੁਨਰ-ਸੁਰਜੀਤੀ’ ਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਸੀ।ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਪੇਸ਼ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੁੱਕਵੇਂ ਹੱਲ ਤਲਾਸ਼ਣ ਲਈ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਵਟਾਂਦਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਸੀ।ਇਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਖ ਵਕਤਾ ਵੱਜੋਂ ਡਾ.ਅਨਿਲ.ਕੇ.ਸ਼ਰਮਾ, ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਖੀ, ਬਾਇਉਟੈਕਨਾਲੌਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ, ਐੱਮ.ਐੱਮ.ਡੀਮਡ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਮੁਲਾਣਾ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਿਰਕਤ ਕੀਤੀ।ਉਹ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਜੀਵਾਣੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਪੁਨਰ-ਸੁਰਜੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਖੋਜ-ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਾਲਜ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ.ਖੁਸ਼ਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਵਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਵਿਗਾੜਾਂ੍ਹ ਬਾਰੇ ਹਾਲੇ ਤੱਕ ਗਿਣੇ-ਚੁਣੇ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਹੀ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਚਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਜ਼ੁਕ ਤੰਦਾਂ ਨੁੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਾਰਪੋਰੇਟ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੇ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਰਗੇ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਖੋਜਾਂ ਲਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਾਹਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਗਰੁੱਪਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਆਮ ਪਬਲਿਕ ਤੱਕ ਲੈਕੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ੍ਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਯੋਜਨਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਅਸ਼ਵਨੀ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ, ਡੀਨ, ਲਾਈਫ ਸਾਇੰਸ਼ਿਜ਼ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਗਰੂਕਤਾ ਫੈਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ‘ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਪੁਨਰ-ਸੁਰਜੀਤੀ’ ਥੀਮ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤੂ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਪੁਨਰ-ਸੁਰਜੀਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਵਾਰਥੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦੁਰਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਵਣ ਨੂੰ ਸਥਿਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ, ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ-ਵਿਗਾੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ-ਵਿੰਭਿੰਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਸੁਹਿਰਦ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ.ਅਨਿਲ.ਕੇ.ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਕੀਟ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਣੂ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰੀ-ਸਾਈਕਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਯੋਗ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ-ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਕੀਟ-ਨਾਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੁਕਸਾਨਦੇਹ ਕਾਰਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਾਰਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਕ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ੳੇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਕੀਟਾਂ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਣੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਾਲ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਿੱਕੇ ਤੇ ਕੈਡੀਮੀਅਮ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੀਆਂ ਧਾਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਘਟਾਉਣ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਾਲ ਖਤਮ ਹੋਏ ਉਪਜਾਊਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਖੋਜਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਤੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਗਰਿਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹੀ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਫੈਲਾਕੇ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਡਾ.ਰੋਹਿਤ ਸਚਦੇਵਾ ਨੇ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਤੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦਾ ਮਤਾ ਬਾਇਉਟੈਕਨਾਲੌਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ।ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਅ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਹਾਜ਼ਿਰ ਰਹੇ।
